WWOOF with Origins

Travel and work exchange play an integral role in Origin's seasonal work cycle. When the ground freezes in New York, Team Origins closes down the cafe to explore global food culture by volunteering on organic farms through the WWOOF network (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms). In the past 4 years we have collectively volunteered on organic farms in Peru, Ecuador, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Thailand, India, Nepal, and Hawaii. With each new season, we hope to continue bringing stories of our organic farming experiences back to share with our community in New York.

Through the WWOOF network we also have the privilege of hosting international volunteers during the spring, summer & fall here at Origins. So far we've had volunteers appear from France, Italy, Chile, Armenia, Israel, and several from the United States. The result in the kitchen is a unique local freshness infused with food traditions from around the world, inspired and enriched by our seasonal travels and visiting volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering at Origins for two or more weeks, sign up through www.wwoofusa.org and find our profile at https://wwoofusa.org/farm/origins-cafe-gardens/ or contact us directly at celebrateorigins@gmail.com

Origins WWOOFer Testimonial

"My time in Origins Cafe was a happy and important moment in my life. During a trip that lasted more than a year, I had the opportunity to meet also them, a very special family. I immediately felt good, at home, and I got involved into the everyday family and work. Thanks to them, I rediscovered old memories in me: the desire to do family, to work for a common goal and to eat together in the evening and tell us about the day. Everything was wonderful, organising a good common job. It was hard to leave after a month of daily life together: Mary, Brent, Kristen, Dana, Blair.... and not least Cali that every morning came to give me a joyful good morning greeting. Thanks Origins Cafe and Rocio for giving me the most beautiful thing in the world: Happiness! Today I can say I have a family also in Cooperstown and we won’t ever forget it!" -Eduardo, Italy

"The experience of exchanging labor for hospitality, getting to be part of a hard-work family, getting to know the local farmers community, is one of the richest that I have lived by now. It is a great way to live and get to know one place, because you don't just visit, you are not a tourist. With WWOOF you have the opportunity to be part of a community in a really short time, creating close ties and communicating with people in a truly close way. It was charming to live in Cooperstown as a local and to be hosted by the Leonard family, being a source of help and exchange of knowledge, being part of other’s learning process, and to learn from them at the same time. This is an experience that I highly recommend to anyone who is open minded and willing to live a full journey of growth." - Rocio, Chile

"Origins Cafe and Carefree Gardens will always have a special place in my heart. When I first set-out to become a WWOOFer, I was seeking an experience that included a food/cooking agenda. What I didn't realize is that my hosts would become life-long friends and family. For 3 months I lived and worked here as a WWOOFer! From day one, I was treated like one of the family. I couldn't have asked for anything more from a WWOOFing experience. Dana and Kristen are true rockstars. The Origins mission is beautiful and incredibly significant. I feel lucky to have been a part of it and to see their growth and success continue! This is truly and incredible place, with incredible people, doing incredible and meaningful work! I wish them always success and prosperity!" -Andy Katz, New Jersey

"Origins Cafe inspires, motivates, and creates. I could not have chosen a better place to WWOOF. I arrived at Origins Cafe one morning in August 2014 without many expectations...just a fun way to spend part of my summer. What I found blew me away and gave me so much more than I could ever imagine. From the first moment I stepped onto the property until the day I left, I was constantly learning new things in this vibrant and dynamic community. The cafe itself is incredibly beautiful with the chillest ambiance. The food is some of the most amazing I have tasted (and my family is from France, so that's saying something). The Origins community, especially Kristen and Dana, are truly the most genuine, welcoming, friendly, and inspirational people I know. As a WWOOFer, I was treated like family. At Origins, you can find a place for your talents, whether it be gardening, art, or cooking, or even hula hooping. I study Nutrition and love cooking so immediately found my niche helping to prepare, cook, and plan meals for the cafe. I loved being able to partake in a wide variety of activities- from attending local farmer's markets to cooking 13 blueberry cheesecakes in one afternoon. Being a part of this team is truly one of the most rewarding experiences I've had the pleasure to be a part of. Origins is spreading change one bite at a time and I feel blessed and fortunate that I was able to indulge in a part in it." - Maddie, USA

"I remain SO very grateful for my visit to Cooperstown and sharing time with the Leonard family. What a gift that time was and is. .I remain very confident our paths will cross again!" - Laura, Armenia
